EXPO 2025 in Osaka will offer a view into the future, an extravaganza of innovation and technology. Amidst the gleaming pavilions and futuristic exhibits, a question lingers: is its embrace of NFTs a genuine leap forward, or simply another stop on the Web3 hype train? Are we really experiencing the birth of a new age for event experiences, or is this just a brilliant marketing ploy to look like they’re moving forward? I'm skeptical, and you should be too.

Digital Trinkets Or Real Value?

Let's be blunt: what's the actual utility of these NFTs? Pavilion passes – sure, that makes sense. Limited-edition artworks? Maybe, for collectors. But interactive badges and digital collectibles? Are we truly enhancing the Expo experience, or merely building a metaverse-style electronic junkyard of ephemeral digital baubles? The glamour of “exclusive content” and AR features seems pretty hollow. Will these features really lead to a better experience for the typical visitor? Or will they instead be hidden under mountains of complexity and cost, discouraging all but the most crypto-savvy participants?

Think about it. You’ll have new opportunities to meet – and you’re already paying for all that travel, accommodation, and entry to the Expo. Are you ready to go through all the hurdles of establishing a new digital wallet? Getting to it would require you to learn about what gas fees are, even on an “energy-efficient blockchain,” and figure out the NFT marketplace. Otherwise I suspect the bulk of these NFTs will just get ignored, languishing in digital limbo. That seems a little worse than just providing a fancier brochure at an upcharge.

Secure Wallet Or Data Mine?

Designed for easy and secure use, the “EXPO 2025 Digital Wallet” is presented as smart digital wallet. How secure is secure? We've seen countless crypto hacks and scams, and the promise of "advanced encryption" and "regular security audits" isn't exactly reassuring. So what do you do when, not if, but when a vulnerability is discovered and exploited? Will the typical Expo visitor be able to feel their way through the debris? Most of these prospective attendees will be crypto newbies.

Even more troubling is the way in which this enforcement-heavy scheme would enable data collection. This wallet is about more than just holding their new digital assets. It’s because it constantly monitors your motions, transactions, and contact with the Expo world. This is a goldmine of data. Who has access to that data? How is it being used? Even if the Expo is using privacy-respecting policies, the risk of misuse and government overreach is real. Remember, this is a government-backed initiative. How much control will they use to this new digital public square? Are we trading convenience for privacy?

Greenwashing Or Real Sustainability?

Additionally, the argument for an “energy-efficient blockchain network” should be a warning sign. Which blockchain are they using? These reasons alone are enough to agree that while Proof-of-Stake is certainly an improvement over Proof-of-Work, it’s no magic bullet. Show us some independently assured data on the real world energy use. However, without transparency, this appears to be a textbook example of greenwashing. Companies are greenwashing—that is, using environmental concerns to promote themselves when they truly aren’t committed.

The Web3 ecosystem is facing an acute sustainability crisis. Promoting NFTs on a potentially energy-intensive platform undermines the Expo's broader theme of "Designing the Future Society for Our Lives." If we’re really delivering a better future, then that future has to be delivered on responsible, sustainable lines. We have to look seriously at the environmental consequences of this NFT project. We can’t ignore it with empty boilerplate about improving our efficiency.

Beyond The Hype, What Remains?

What becomes of these NFTs once the Expo shutters its doors on October 13, 2025? Will they retain any value? Will a dynamic secondary market grow up around them, or will they fizzle out like digital baubles, left in some virtual drawer forlorn and valueless. The potential for NFT speculation is not only a possibility, it is a legitimate ethical concern. Are we tempting event participants into speculation on digital assets with uncertain value?

This has all the hallmarks of a Beanie Baby bubble from the 90s. Remember those? Limited edition collectible plush toys were advertised as can’t-miss opportunities. That hype was sufficient to create incredible price speculation, which eventually caused a huge market collapse. Are we doomed to repeat the past mistakes with NFTs?

In the end, EXPO 2025’s NFT gamble will be successful if it can provide actual value that goes beyond the buzzwords. The upside – the potential – is huge, but the downsides – the risks – are deep. Big warning here though, before you get all in, understand the security risks, the climate cost and overall value of these digital goods. This is not an argument against innovation. It’s not about restricting innovation; it’s about holding technology accountable and making sure it’s serving humanity rather than seeking to control it. Take as big a step back and as big a grain of salt as you can. Your digital wallet – and the country’s transition to a cashless society – just might hinge on it.
