The NFT bubble has burst. We all saw it coming, didn't we? And now headlines are shouting about the massive decrease in trading volumes. With each passing day, marketplaces shutter their digital doors for good and “I told you so” vibes fill the crypto-sphere. So it would be very easy to wave goodbye to NFTs, another flash-in-the-pan tech fad. But before we bury them completely, let's talk about Southeast Asia – and the artists who are just getting started.
Is Scarcity Really All It Is?
The issue with the bulk of NFTs, what they were really selling, let’s face it, was scarcity. Artificial scarcity. And a JPEG with a serial number, masquerading as digital art. And, as we’ve learned, that’s not good enough. The problem is that the hype train needs constant fuel. It feeds off of expensive promotion, seducing award promises, and the infinite pursuit of that elusive “blue chip” project. It's a hamster wheel of diminishing returns. Think of it like this: the emperor has no clothes, and everyone's finally noticed.
Southeast Asia isn't exactly known for emperors in fancy clothes. It's known for resilience. For resourcefulness. For making do with what they have. This open spirit can reinvigorate the original idea of NFTs. Maybe the original execution was irretrievably misguided, but we can change that.
Real Value, Real People, Real Art
I’ve seen firsthand, through Nandar's work organizing hackathons and fostering the creative community in Southeast Asia, the untapped potential that exists. These artists aren't chasing Lambos. They're often struggling to make ends meet, battling systemic barriers to entry in the traditional art world: gatekeeping galleries, expensive shipping costs, and limited access to global markets. Here is where NFTs can – and must – make an impact.
Imagine an artist in Myanmar leveraging NFTs to fund a new community space. They’re doing this by eliminating corrupt officials and avoiding international developmental organizations. Imagine an artisan from Laos, seamlessly marketing digital designs. These designs open the beautiful world of their artistry to insider content and powerful, direct relationships with the customers who really get that story behind the art. This isn’t NFT speculation, flipping JPEGs for profit nonsense, it’s what happens when you build sustainable communities and real value.
Of course, there are challenges. Access to technology, digital literacy, and the constant danger of scams are all legitimate concerns. We need to address these head-on. Targeted educational programs, targeted community-based initiatives, coupled with easy-to-use technological platforms are critical for success. Let’s not allow these challenges to be the reason that we throw out the whole idea. Instead, let’s think of them as opportunities to create a more inclusive and equitable art ecosystem.
At this point my blood pressure climbs as I consider how the tech industry and crypto bros are taking advantage of artists. They’re not going to be satisfied until they’ve milked the very dregs from them! They are not interested in the culture, they are only interested in the commerce! We need to stop them.

Access For All Is The Key
The NFT market as it existed was on the way out, and this was indeed a fate to hope for. The underlying technology is unbelievably awesome. It provides new opportunities for creators to produce one-of-a-kind digital collectibles, engage more deeply with supporters, and foster communities without middlemen. It's up to us to use it responsibly, ethically, and in a way that empowers artists, especially those in developing economies who have the most to gain.
Don’t let the excesses of the NFT boom distract us from the real promise of this technology. Together, let’s work on creating the more sustainable, equitable, and human art world that we all know is possible. We can help Southeast Asia’s artists break through. Because their voices deserve to be heard. And we need to act now.
Support Artists, Build Communities Now
The NFT market as it was might be dying, and good riddance. But the underlying technology – the ability to create unique digital assets, connect directly with fans, and build decentralized communities – is still incredibly powerful. It's up to us to use it responsibly, ethically, and in a way that empowers artists, especially those in developing economies who have the most to gain.
- Buy NFTs directly from Southeast Asian artists. Seek out creators who are using NFTs for more than just speculative gains.
- Join their communities. Engage in discussions, offer support, and help spread the word.
- Donate to organizations that are working to promote blockchain adoption and digital literacy in the region.
Let's not allow the excesses of the NFT boom to blind us to the genuine potential of this technology. Let's focus on building a more sustainable, equitable, and human art world. Let's give Southeast Asia's artists the chance to thrive. Because their voices deserve to be heard. And we need to act now.
